When I'm in need of a quick and easy appetizer, I look for one that has minimal ingredients and is delicious. This recipe for Stovetop BBQ Little Smokies is just that. Make on the stovetop for a quick appetizer or in a crock pot for a hands off version.
Mini cocktail hot dogs are cooked in a savory bbq sauce to make the perfect easy appetizer.

What are Little Smokies?
Little Smokies or Lil Smokies are a brand of miniature smoked sausages. Similar names for these are cocktail hot dogs, cocktail weenies, cocktail wieners, mini hot dogs, etc. While these are smoked, they still need to be cooked in order to be eaten like other varieties of sausage and hot dogs.
If you have another variation of these miniature hot dogs or sausages, they should be able to be used for this recipe. Another alternative is buying full sized hot dogs and sausages and slicing them before cooking to that they are bite sized pieces for appetizers.
Can BBQ Little Smokies be made in a crockpot?
For a hands off version of this recipe, try making it in a crock pot. To make in a crock pot, dump ingredients into the pot then cook on low for at least an hour. Serve when your guests arrive and use the time these are cooking for last minute cleaning or whatever else is needed.
While stovetop and crock pot are the best options for making this recipe, I do caution you to avoid using the instant pot. As one of my readers emailed me, it turned out as complete mush and only would have taken a few additional minutes if it had been made on the stovetop.
When to serve Stovetop BBQ Smokies
To be honest, these can be served whenever you want them. But I like to keep them on hand in case we have guests and I need a quick appetizer on the fly. I've made these for both casual gatherings and parties on new years.
This past year I made these for our Super Bowl party and they were a hit. I've also made them for other holiday gatherings such as Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day and even some birthdays too.
