When I want to kick up the spice with a pasta dish, I make Spicy Shrimp Fra Diavolo. This pasta dish has a well seasoned spicy red sauce, garlicky shrimp and delicious pasta. It's a restaurant worthy comfort food that's an easy enough recipe to be made at home.

What is Fra Diavolo?
Fra Diavolo is an Italian red sauce. The translation means "Brother Devil" which is in reference to the level of spice. The tomato sauce is seasoned with crushed red pepper, basil, and garlic. This sauce is similar to arrabiata, but a bit milder in spice level. Need less to say Shrimp Fra Diavolo will be a spicy dish, so chef beware!
What type of pasta to use
This Shrimp Fra Diavolo recipe calls for Linguine pasta, however any noodle type pasta can be used in this recipe. As other alternatives, shaped pasta such as rotini could also be used. Smaller, delicate pasta shapes should be avoided as this sauce is both robust in flavor and consistency. Either fresh or dried pasta can be used in this recipe.
How to peel shrimp
While you can buy peeled and deveined shrimp from the grocery store, sometimes you may need to peel your own. It's a rather easy process that only adds a few minutes to your cooking.
To begin, peel the underside of the shrimp starting from the legs to the tail. You may leave on the last segment that covers the end of the tail. The using a paring knife, make a small slice in the shrimp running lengthwise from the head to the tail. Using the knife, remove the dark vein in the shrimp. Now your shrimp are peeled and deveined. This article is a good resource and provides great instructional images.
Ingredients Needed
- 12 Oz Canned Crushed Tomatoes
- 5 Cloves Garlic Minced
- 2 Tbsp Basil
- Salt
- Pepper
- 1 Tbsp Crushed Red Chili Pepper
- 1 Pound Linguine Cooked per package instructions
- 1 Pound Shrimp Peeled and deveined, thawed
- 2 Tbsp Olive Oil
Storage
Spicy Shrimp Fra Diavolo can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Due to the recipe being a seafood one, I would not recommend keeping in the fridge longer.
The red sauce can be stored in the freezer. Place sauce in an ice cube tray to pre portion and let freeze overnight. Place each sauce pod in a freezer proof ziploc bag and store up to 3 months in the freezer.
Sauce can be used by adding to a saucepan and reheating on a low heat. Unfortunately I would not recommend freezing the shrimp or pasta as they do not reheat as nicely as the pasta sauce. However both the shrimp and pasta are easy to cook and add to the reheated sauce.
Equipment Needed
