One of my favorite appetizers are mussels. I don't normally treat myself to them as my partner has a seafood allergy, but every once in a while I just have to have them (it's the new englander in me!) I loved this recipe for Steamed Mussels in White Wine and am excited to share it with you!
In this recipe mussels are steamed in a fragrant wine wine sauce with a mix of shallots and topped with parsley. Served with bread to mop up all of the steaming liquid.

What are mussels
Mussels are a type of shellfish that are commonly found in both fresh and salt water. Mussels are a popular cuisine worldwide and are a fairly inexpensive form of seafood. Mussels can be found at most chain grocery stores and specialty seafood stores.
How to prepare mussels
Most store bought mussels will be cleaned to some degree, but additional cleaning is necessary. To clean, place mussels in a large colander under running water. Discard any mussels that have a broken shell. Using a scrubbing brush, scrub each shell to remove any debris, seaweed, barnacles or sand. Next remove the beard, the clump of hair like fibers attached to the shell. Once mussels are cleaned and debearded, they are ready to cook.

How to cook Mussels
Making Mussels in White Wine is a fairly easy recipe and a quick one as well. Add 1 inch of broth to a large lidded pot and bring to a boil. Place mussels in the pot and cover to steam. Steam for 3 minutes and remove lid. Gently stir the pot, moving any unopened mussels to the bottom. Return the lid and steam for 2 more minutes. Discard any unopened mussels, then they are ready to serve. Mussels are best served with a
Ingredients Needed
- 2 Tbsp Olive Oil
- 1 Clove Garlic Minced
- 1 Shallot Sliced
- Salt
- Pepper

- 1 ½ Cups Dry White wine
- 4 Tbsp Butter

Equipment Needed

Storage
Live Mussels: When you buy mussels, you are buying them live and will need to keep them alive until you cook them. The best way to keep them alive is to keep them in their plastic mesh and wrapped with a wet paper towel. Mussels like cool and damp, but still need to breathe. Mussels can be stored in the fridge for up to several days.
Avoid wrapping them in plastic or placing in a plastic bag as they will be unable to breathe. Do not place mussels in water. Most mussels are raised in salt water so placing them in fresh water will kill them.
Cooked Mussels: If you have any leftovers, don't throw them out. Remove the meat from the mussels and place in an airtight. Discard the shells. Cover meat completely in broth and seal. Mussels can be stored for 1 day after cooking in the fridge or up to 3 months when stored in the freezer.
