Pierogi and Kielbasa Bake pinterest image.

How can I combine two polish favorites into one dish? I saw a pierogi bake recipe on the Pillsbury website and knew I had to make my own version of it. This Kielbasa and Pierogi Bake is a delicious combination of kielbasa and pierogi in a creamy, cheesy sauce. It's an indulgent recipe that is a family favorite comfort food.

Using frozen pierogi, this recipe comes together quickly for an easy dinner. If you like Polish food, make sure to check out my Polish Meat Pierogi, my Stuffed Cabbage Rolls or my One Pan Kielbasa and Cabbage recipes too!

What are Pierogi

Pierogi are a polish dumpling. They are also found in the Ukraine, parts of Russia and other eastern European countries. Pierogi are made with unleavened dough, boiled and then pan fried. Pierogi filling varies and can be minced meat, cabbage, sauerkraut, potato, cheese or even fruits for a dessert pierogi. This recipe for Kielbasa and Pierogi Bake uses potato as the filling.

What is Kielbasa

Kielbasa is a form of sausage originating from Poland. In the United States it is most often seen packaged as a U shape. There is no singular form of sausage that is specific to kielbasa, it instead covers a wide variety of Polish Sausage. Kielbasa can be served warmed, grilled, or boiled and is best served with traditional Polish dishes such as sauerkraut or pierogies.

What is a traditional Pierogi

Every polish family has a traditional pierogi recipe and traditional filling, however there's so much variation that "traditional" does not mean standardized. When I was growing up, our pierogi were ground beef, farmers cheese, potato and cabbage filled. The recipes that use cheddar or mozzarella are bizarre to me, but I'm sure many others have never heard of farmer's cheese!

What is the difference between kielbasa and sausage

Kielbasa is known for its coarse texture, garlic seasoning and being made from pork. Kielbasa differs from other sausage varieties in that it the meat and seasonings typically stay the same. Kielbasa is typically not smoked, which is another way that it differs from most sausage.

  • 16 Oz Frozen Potato Pierogi
  • 1 Tbsp Water
  • 7 Oz Kielbasa Sliced
  • 4 Oz Cream Cheese Softened
  • ½ Cup Sour Cream
  • ½ Cup Chicken Broth
  • Pepper
  • 1 Cup Cheddar Cheese
  • ½ Cup Green Onion Sliced

Equipment Needed

  • 12X8 Baking Dish
  • Mixing Bowls
  • Aluminum Foil
  • Wooden Spoon

Storage

Kielbasa and Pierogi Bake can be stored in the fridge for up to 4 days. Cover baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and place in the fridge.

To reheat, place baking dish in the oven at 375 degrees and warm up for 15-20 minutes of until warm thoughout.

If reheating a single portion, use a microwave oven to reheat the serving on a plate or bowl.

Kielbasa and Pierogi Bake is best not frozen as a leftover due to the dairy products. The texture of the dairy can separate when reheating from frozen. This won't affect the taste but will affect the texture.
