Of all of the flavors in the world, honey is one of my all time favorites. Its sweetness, its rich fullness and the fact that it will never spoil even after being left in a cabinet for ages all make for a reliable seasoning. Today I’m posting a recipe for Honey BBQ Shrimp that is a versatile recipe for either winter or summer months. How to Marinate Honey BBQ Shrimp
Marinating shrimp in honey is an easy process and one that does not require an extended period of time to marinate. Shrimp absorb flavor easily and are delicious when paired with a light sweet flavor like honey. To marinate, combine shrimp, honey, vinegar and olive oil in a ziploc bag and let marinate in the fridge for 30 minutes to 24 hours.
Once marinated, these guys cook quickly. The sugar from the honey caramelizes on the shrimp and the barbecue sauce add some tanginess and spice. You don’t have to work hard for great flavor, you just have to know how to bring it to life.
How to peel shrimp
While you can buy peeled and deveined shrimp from the grocery store, sometimes you may need to peel your own. It's a rather easy process that only adds a few minutes to your cooking.
To begin, peel the underside of the shrimp starting from the legs to the tail. You may leave on the last segment that covers the end of the tail. The using a paring knife, make a small slice in the shrimp running lengthwise from the head to the tail. Using the knife, remove the dark vein in the shrimp. Now your shrimp are peeled and deveined. This article is a good resource and provides great instructional images.
What type of shrimp to buy
Ok I am partial to smaller shrimp as I've grown up in New England and find that variety to have the best texture and taste. If you are buying frozen shrimp, but raw uncooked shrimp in a small-medium size. You can use large shrimp for this recipe, however the marinate and cook times may differ due to the larger size. Larger sized shrimp will also have a rougher texture than the smaller ones (but don't worry, they're still delicious!)
