what is London broil

London broil is a cut of steak that is usually a top round cut or a flank steak. The name London Broil can apply to either cut. London Broil is typically marinated for several hours then either broiled or grilled at a high temperature. It is then served sliced thinly across the grain. London Broil is an American dish and is not British at all.

London Broil is known as a tougher cut of meat so it needs to be cooked correctly in order to be perfect. Cooking at a high temperature for a short period of time in either a broiler or on a grill is my preferred method. Another option is to cook at a low heat for a long time in either a dutch oven or a slow cooker.

To help mitigate the toughness, slicing the steak thinly will also help. Thicker slices will tend to be chewier and harder to consume.

how to marinate Balsamic Glazed London Broil

London Broil should be marinated between 2-24 hours so that the meat tenderizes and the flavors seep into the meat. It's a tougher cut of meat, so marinating is a must! This Balsamic Glazed London Broil recipe marinates easily with a bit of oil, balsamic vinegar, brown sugar, garlic, salt and pepper. I usually marinate my meat the morning before cooking it so that it can marinate in the fridge while I'm at work.

how to cook london broil in the oven

London broil is an easy and versatile cut of steak to cook. In the warmer months it can be grilled, but in the cold months I like to broil it in the oven.

step 1: marinate

First I make my marinade for the London Broil and let it marinate for a few hours up to 24 hours. This process will help to both season and tenderize the meat.

step 2: how long to bake london broil in the oven

Turn your broiler on high and allow to preheat for several minutes. Place your London Broil on a baking sheet and pat dry with a paper towel. Broil for 4-5 minutes per a side or until desired doneness. To serve, slice thinly across the grain.
